Following a competitive recruitment process with a strong field of qualified candidates, Thyboron Port has appointed Asbjørn Byskov Strunk as its new Head of Maritime Operations.

He will take up the position on 15 October 2026, succeeding Theis Christensen, who is retiring after more than 13 years in the role.

Asbjørn brings many years of experience from the rescue service in Thyboron, where he has been part of the organisation and its day-to-day management since 2009. Among other things, he played a key role in the major transition of the rescue service from the Danish Navy to the Danish Emergency Management Agency – a process that successfully transferred the organisation without losing important skills and expertise.

He is also Chairman of the Danish Association of Rescue Personnel and has built strong working relationships with authorities, government agencies and maritime stakeholders, both nationally and internationally.

Strong Local Knowledge of the Port, Waters and Community

Asbjørn is local to the area, knows Thyboron well and has spent much of his working life on the port and in the surrounding waters. He therefore brings extensive knowledge of both the local maritime conditions and the community of which the port is an important part.

He also brings an international perspective through collaboration and the exchange of experience with rescue services across the North Sea region.

His motivation for applying for the position was immediate when he saw the job advertisement during his summer holiday:

“That is a role I can really see myself in.”

For Asbjørn, Thyborøn Port is already a well-functioning organisation. His first priority will therefore be to learn, listen and understand what already works well.

“I see the maritime department as a well-functioning organisation that should continue to operate successfully. I am not coming in with ambitions to make major changes simply for the sake of change. First, I need to get to know the organisation and understand how things are done.”

Development and Service Go Hand in Hand

Development is, however, an important driving force for the new Head of Maritime Operations.

Asbjørn has worked with the implementation of new IT systems, the development of new vessels and new technology within the rescue service. He also sees significant potential in the continued development of Thyboron Port.

“Thyboron Port is facing an exciting period of development over the coming years. I simply want to be part of it.”

For him, the role is also about creating the right conditions for the companies operating at the port – both those already established here and those that will come in the future.

He brings a strong service mindset from the rescue service, where much of the job is about being ready when others need assistance.

A Great Responsibility – and Big Shoes to Fill

Asbjørn is fully aware that he is taking over a well-functioning team and succeeding a highly respected manager.

For more than 13 years, Theis Christensen has led Thyboron Port's maritime department and, together with his team, ensured a high level of service for the many vessels calling at the port each year.

Asbjørn approaches this responsibility with respect and humility.

“I know they are big shoes to fill. Theis is a well-liked man, and I am looking forward to getting to know the team and seeing how they work.”

At the same time, he is very much looking forward to becoming part of the team at Thyboron Port:

“I am incredibly excited. Of course, there are also a few butterflies in my stomach. I am leaving something that I have enjoyed being part of for many years, but I also feel that this is the right next step.”
